Group & Centre Activities

Inclusive, worker-facilitated group programs focused on building real-world life skills, fitness, and lifelong friendships.

What group and centre-based activities are

Group and centre-based activities are structured programmes delivered to a group of participants, with shared support worker coverage across the group.

They are not one-on-one community access support. They are not individual programmes tailored to a single participant's daily routine.

Group activities bring participants together, for social connection, skill development, recreation, and community engagement, in a structured setting with trained support. Because support is shared across participants, costs per person are lower than individual supports.

Group activities vs one-on-one support

Group and centre-based activities (0136) and community participation support (0125) both help participants engage with their community. They are not the same support.

Both can appear in your NDIS plan at the same time. Many participants use group activities for social connection and peer engagement, and one-on-one support for individual community access.

What group activities does not cover

Group and centre-based activity funding does not cover:

  • Individual one-on-one support within a group session, this is funded separately if required
  • The cost of activity materials, entry fees, or recreational costs, the NDIS funds your worker's time, not the activity cost
  • Transport to and from activities, this may be claimable separately under activity-based transport, confirm with your plan manager or support coordinator
  • Is this support right for you?

Group and centre-based activities may be right for you if:

  • You want to connect with peers and build friendships in a structured setting
  • You are interested in developing skills or exploring interests alongside others
  • You want to take part in regular structured programmes rather than ad hoc individual outings
  • Group-based support aligns with your goals and you are comfortable in a shared support environment
  • Your NDIS plan includes funding under Core Supports, Assistance with Social and Community Participation (Category 04), registration group 0136
  • Group activities are not suited to every participant. If you have high support needs that require one-on-one attention throughout a session, one-on-one community participation support may be more appropriate. We will be upfront with you about this.

    FAQ's

    Common questions

Most frequently asked questions about our Group & Centre-Based Activities service

What is the difference between group activities and one-on-one community participation support?

Community participation support (0125) funds a dedicated support worker for you individually. Group and centre-based activities (0136) fund shared support across a group of participants. Group activities are structured programmes with peers, the focus is connection, shared experience, and group engagement. One-on-one support is for individual access and routine. Both are funded under Core Supports and can appear in the same plan.

What support ratios apply to group activities?

Support ratios for group activities vary depending on the activity and the support needs of participants. Common ratios are 1:2, 1:3, or higher. The ratio affects the per-participant cost. We discuss the appropriate ratio with you before you begin, based on your support needs.

Does my NDIS plan need to specifically include group activity funding?

Yes. Group and centre-based activities are funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Social and Community Participation (Category 04), registration group 0136. If it is not in your current plan, speak with your support coordinator or LAC about requesting it.

Can I attend group activities if I also have one-on-one support?

Yes. Many participants have both in their plan. Group activities for peer connection and structured programmes, one-on-one support for individual community access and routine. The two complement each other and can run in parallel.

What if I need more support than the group ratio provides?

If your support needs are too high to be safely met within the group ratio, one-on-one support may be more appropriate. In some cases, a participant can attend a group activity while also having individual support, but this is funded separately. We will discuss this with you honestly during the consultation.

Will I always be with the same group of participants?

Where possible, yes. Consistent group membership builds genuine social connection and makes the environment more comfortable, particularly for participants who find new situations difficult. We aim for stable group compositions for ongoing programmes.

Does transport to group activities come out of my 0136 funding?

Not automatically. Transport to and from group activities may be claimable under activity-based transport, separately from the group activity itself. Your plan manager or support coordinator can confirm what is covered in your plan.
